How to Start a Sports Academy in India: A Practical Checklist
By the Athlyne team · · 2 min read
Most academies start with one coach, one ground and a handful of children whose parents asked. Getting from there to a proper academy is less about money and more about getting a few basics right early, before bad habits set in.
1. Decide who you will coach
Pick your sport and the age group you are best with. Coaching five-year-olds and coaching state-level juniors are different jobs. Start narrow, do it well, and add batches once the first ones are full.
2. Get your coaching credentials in order
Parents ask. A coaching certificate from your sport's federation or a recognised coaching course, plus a first aid course, makes the conversation easy. If you hire coaches, check their credentials the same way.
3. Find a venue you can keep
Schools, clubs, apartment complexes and turf grounds all rent space by the hour. A school tie-up can bring both a ground and students. Whatever you choose, get the timings and rent in writing, and have a plan for the monsoon.
4. Plan your batches and timings
Group students by age and level, keep batches small enough to coach properly, and fix timings around school hours. Early mornings and evenings fill first. Decide in advance how many students a batch can take, so you know when to open the next one.
5. Set your fees and policies
Work out your costs, choose a fee model and write down your rules on fee dates, holidays, long absences and refunds. Our guide on how to set academy fees walks through it.
6. Collect the right details from every family
A simple registration form saves trouble later. Ask for:
- The student's name and date of birth
- Parents' names and phone numbers, and an emergency contact
- Any medical conditions, allergies or injuries the coach should know about
- Consent to take part, and separate consent for photos and videos
7. Think about safety from day one
Keep a first aid kit at every session, know where the nearest hospital is, and have each child's emergency contact on your phone. Plan for heat, hydration and rain. Parents notice when a coach takes safety seriously.
8. Set up the business side
Open a separate bank account and UPI ID for the academy so fees don't mix with your own money. Many small academies start as a sole proprietorship and register as a small business under Udyam. Ask a chartered accountant about GST and the right structure for you.
9. Find your first students
Word of mouth from happy parents is still the best marketing. Help it along with a Google Business Profile so you show up on Maps, a summer camp or free trial day, tie-ups with nearby schools and apartment complexes, and a simple page that shows your batches, timings and fees.
10. Keep records from the first day
Attendance, fees and notes on each student are far easier to keep from the start than to rebuild later. Athlyne's Free plan covers up to 10 students, so you can set up your batches and students from day one at no cost and move up a plan as you grow.
